Circle

Circle is an ambient live performance by Korean sound artist Huh Namhoon and ceramic artist Tōsei – an hour in which two circular movements meet: the rotation of the pottery wheel and the repetition of sound loops. A circle begins with movement and returns to where it started, yet it is never exactly the same.

The two work side by side. Huh Namhoon builds evolving layers of ambient sound from a table of samplers, mixers, and tangled cables, while Tōsei transforms clay through the traditional East Asian art of wheel throwing. The performance moves as a journey – from ambient music into a live throwing demonstration and back into sound again, completing a circle.

Watching clay being thrown is rare in itself – a moment where technique, tradition, and intuition come together, and a process seldom open to the public. In the small room, ringed by shelves of finished vessels, sound, clay, and time slowly became one. Like the vessels, these photographs were shaped by hand – shot on film and printed in the darkroom, one frame at a time, before being scanned. Tōsei's wheel-thrown work continues at his Copenhagen studio, Tōseibo – on Instagram and at toseibo.com.
